How to cook Chana Dal ?

Ingredients

  • You will need:
    1 cup dried brown channa dal (chickpea)
    2 cups water
    1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon Garlic and Ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon Tomato paste
  • Green chili and fresh coriendar leaves for granishing and inhancing the taste

Method

Wash the dal thoroughly under running tap water. Drain the water completely.

  • Add 2 cups of water to the dal and soak overnight.
  • In the morning, drain the water and add the soaked dal into a pressure cooker.
  • Cook the dal until it becomes soft.
  • Heat 1 tablespoons of oil or ghee in a pan. Once hot, add chopped onios when the onions have lightly browned, add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, ginger-garlic paste, tomato paste, mix well on a low heat for 4-5 min.The oil should also start to leave the masala mixture which is an indication that the onion-tomato base mixture is fully cooked. Add dal into the mixture and cook for 4-5 min.If  you want to make dry chana daal it’s ready to serve if not in that case  you can add 2 cup water and cook for 4-5 min more.
  • Switch off the heat and add 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves.
  • Transfer the cooked dal into a bowl and mix well.
  • Serve hot with rice or roti.
