DYNAMIC SUNFLOWERS
Do you know sunflowers are heliotropic? Heliotropic means that they turn their flowers to follow the movement of the sun across the sky east to west, and then returns at night to face the east, ready again for the morning sun. This heliotropism happens during the earlier stages before the flower grows heavy with seeds.
- Sunflowers come in various colors (yellow, red, orange, maroon and brown) but they are commonly bright yellow with brown centers that ripen into heavy heads filled with seeds. Its leaves are used as fodder, flowers yield a yellow dye and the seeds contain oil that are used for food.
- Sunflowers require long , hot summers to flower well.
- It grows to between 1 1/2- 3 1/2 meters with some giant variants reaching up to 8 meters.
- grows best in sunny locations (6-8 hours per day).
- Require nutrient, rich well drained soil and thrives in slightly acidic to alkaline soil ( PH 6.0 TO 7.5)
- Avoid over watering
- Grow in large clusters, as they shade the ground and keep the roots cool and ground damp for longer.
- Excellent cut flowers and attractive to bees, butterflies and birds.
